Set in 1984 East Berlin, the film delves into the life of a Stasi agent who becomes engrossed in the lives of a playwright and his lover, whom he is assigned to surveil. This backdrop of surveillance, intrigue, and the stark realities of life under the East German regime provides a rich canvas for a title sequence.

The choice to use Saul Bass's spy style and strong chiaroscuro (light-dark contrast) for the title sequence of "The Lives of Others" is not only pays homage to the film's espionage theme but also deeply resonates with its setting and mood.
